Uni, Reach and Dexter

September 21, 2010

Hasn't this month gone quickly? Only 4 days till I move out, back to uni. It's been a long 4 months. Early on the days were long, protracted, boring. And then as August faded into September, time started to speed up. Now I am here, my holiday is almost done. This is both good and bad.

4 months of nothing but free time starts to get boring. You do the same thing day in, day out. There is no real change in schedule. When I go back to uni, each day will have something different on. Not only will their be lessons, essays, research, general university related activities, but their will be a lot more on my social calender (this calender is metaphorical, though). I will be living in a house with 3 mates, their will be pub visits, their will be clubbing. It shall be awesome.

On the other hand, their will be lectures, essays and research. I do enjoy studying psychology, and I think I made the right subject to study, but actually doing work is kind of a hassle. Especially since this year properly counts towards my final grade, so I need to do a bit better than last year, where I didn't really try.

I am unsure as to when I will be getting internet though. It's quite possible that next week their might not be an On Rails, or atleast, I might not be on it. I'm hoping I will have internet, but it's a 50/50 shot. I am glad to be going back, though.

Anyway, recently I have been playing Halo Reach. As you might remember, recently I talked a little about Halo in a blog. I have also done a Wednesday Rewind on Halo, although that hasn't been uploaded yet. Anyway, I said that it was a mediocre game, with some innovations, sub-par multiplayer and a lame story. That more or less summarised my opinion on the sequels, too. They were shallow, a little boring, and I couldn't get into the multiplayer.

Recently, however, Reach launched, and everyone and their dogs was playing it on my Live list. So I decided to go out and get it. And I am glad I did. Yes, the story so far is still pretty shallow. I don't really care for the characters, either. However, there are some really cool bits about it. There are a host of multiplayer options. You can play through the campaign in co-op, which has been present in all the games, but there is FireFight mode, in which you can set up a whole bunch of different settings and fight AI enemies, competing to get the highest score. Or you can do it on your own, just for fun.

You can also do a huge variety of multiplayer death matches. There is a whole lot of different matches to play. It's also quite good because you get to vote on which match to play, it will give you 3 matches, different types, different maps, based on a “playlist”. The playlist will be selected by the player, so you can choose only to play variation of team deathmatch, or all against all.

You can also create a custom game, but you can only play those with friends. You can fine tune dozens of different settings. Weapons, vehicles, movement, radar. You can create very different matches. Personally I like setting gravity to low, speed to the max, and then give them Snipers and Energy swords. Fun is had by all.

The best thing about the multiplayer is how balanced it is. In Modern Warfare I would get owned every time, and then I would get bored. On Halo, though, I can do fairly well. It's just a lot more fun to me.

I used to be so against Halo, thinking it a generic pile of hype. And now I have fallen into the trap, I have succumbed to all the hype and peer pressure. And I am quite glad I did. The game is pretty awesome.

In other news, I finished watching Season 4 of Dexter. I must say, it was absolutely incredible. Dexter is easily one of the best TV shows I have ever seen. Right up there with Breaking Bad, which is still my favourite. However, the ending to it is such a cock slap. A cock slap in the way that the ending to Code Geass season 2 was a cock slap. I am not going to spoil that, because I am not a total arsehole, but in all seriousness it was incredibly sad. Such a twist, I didn't expect.

The actor who portrays Dexter is a great actor. Well, that or he is actually a serial killer. I can't say that isn't a possibility, his portrayal of a man without conscience seems so real, believable. I really want to read the books, too.

I really should get this NHL review up soon. I need to chase down Josh and get his half of the review soon. I am going to get a review of BlazBlue and Mercenaries 2 up soon too. I am going to review Halo Reach as well, which will happen when I complete the campaign mode. Soon will be a review of Alesana – The emptiness, as well.

Moving consoles and GamesCom

September 16, 2010

I have just booked a hotel for GamesCom, next year. It's in Cologne again, and will happen between the 17th and 22nd of August 2011. The hotel can be amended or cancelled at any point up to 2 days before, so this is by no means a definite thing, but it's certainly a lot of intent.

Of course, the excuse for going is that it is for the site, but in reality it's because we want to go to GamesCom. We will be videoing stuff whilst we are there, though. S...

Black Ops, Duke Nukem and others

September 8, 2010

Well I am so shit at updating here, aren't I? I think I am going to throw out rigid structure, that I don't follow, and replace it with a simple plan: Just update 3 times a week. Do one Monday, Saturday and Sunday for all I care. No one expects this to be updated on time anymore, anyway. I doubt anyone even checks when it's updated, the only visitors are the ones I link from Twitter, as far as I am aware. If I'm wrong and I have more readers, do comment some time, please.

Artist Youngblood Brass Band
Album Centre:Level:Roar
Genre Jazz
Number of songs 15
Label Ozone Records
Standout Tracks Round One, Brooklyn, Human Nature Part 2, Avalanche

Jazz is a genre of which I know very little. Prior to this album the most experience I had was with the Cowboy Bebop soundtrack, which was heavily jazz influenced. So that is to say I went into this album fairly blind about what sort of thing I'd be listening to. I have since listened to a few other snippets of jazz, Marcu...

Current gen gaming

August 31, 2010

I haven't been a serious gamer for very long. In fact, I'd hesitate to call myself a serious gamer now, because I don't game that much, more lately I have been playing games more lately, due to the fact that I am having to review them, but I still don't spend that much of my time playing games.

Although, that isn't specifically true. I do spend a lot of time playing games on my iPod and on my DS. Lately I have been pretty absorbed by Football Manager 10. For those who know n...

Wednesday Rewind shuffle

August 23, 2010

Another day, another blog.

The End.

Wait, wait, I think I need a little more than that. Ah right, I have had some stuff added to my list, my list... of stuff to do. I need to start doing Wednesday Rewinds, alternating every week between me and Sam. Essentially, we have to pre-record 15 weeks worth of footage for this site. That's quite a lot of coverage to record in a relatively small amount of time. 15 episodes of Competitive Streak, 15 episodes of First Five and 15 W...

Xbox Live and MS Points

August 20, 2010

I need to be more strict about my timetable. I mean, these blogs don't take that long to write, yet I am still to lazy to bother with it. Jeez, I really am lazy.

Anyhow, I have started using this as a personal blog for some reason. I don't really have all that much to talk about on gaming, everything that I need to say has been said before, and probably better. AND they probably got paid for it, so...

So I just sent back BlazBlue and Just Cause 2 to LoveFilm, which means I ...

No More Heroes 2 Review.

August 16, 2010
image

Released earlier this year, on the Wii, No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle is the sequel too... Well, to the first No More Heroes, also on the Wii. It is an action game developed by eccentric developer Goichi Suda, also noted for the odd, niche appeal Killer 7 on the PS2.

NMH2 casts you as Travis Touchdown, an otaku with a laser sword (read as lightsaber), who is thrust into the world of assassination for a second time. Like the first, the game uses surreal humour, exaggerated chara...
